How will you facilitate an authentic collaborative learning experience to promote deeper student engagement with content skills and concepts? The second lesson would require learners to collaboratively develop questions to interview a guest speaker from a local landfill to learn what materials can be recycled and how people can start recycling at home. The students will also record this information in their recycling notebook. The students will then use the information from their personal recycling notebook to develop a wiki page that can be accessed by the public.
As members of collaborative groups, how will you support students’ efforts to identify solutions to the problem you are using as the framework for your PBL instructional unit?
I will review each group’s wiki page and provide feedback. I will allow the students to view each wiki page during instruction and we will discuss which information in each blog should be incorporated into our final presentation.
What criteria will you use to assign learners to collaborative groups, including a rationale? What will be the size of the collaborative groups you will include in your unit? I will develop collaborative groups containing four students. I will make an effort to design groups consisting of boys and girls. I will also try to design the groups based on the personalities of the students. I want to establish groups that would promote discussion and engage each student. I do not want all outgoing students in one group or a group composed of mostly shy and reserved students. I want a good mixture to promote participation from each member of the group.
Which digital tools and websites are you considering for collaboration in your unit? I will provide opportunities for students to develop a group wiki page containing all information they have learned through individual research and the interview with the guest speaker. The students will also include a podcast of their interview with the guest speaker in their final presentation. The students will use PowerPoint to develop their final presentation.
How will you assess participation of the students in their collaborative groups? I will review each group member’s recycling notebook to provide a grade participation grade for an individual outcome of the collaboration. I will also view each group’s wiki page to provide a collective participation grade of the collaborative process.
